Ancient India‘s Architecture represents the various periods of
history. The exquisite carving, the imaginations and artistic creativity are
intrinsic to India. Magnificent structures are built in the form of Temple.
Temple is a pious place where boundaries of man and divine meet. It’s a divine
place where everyone is equal in the eyes of the super power, God. Temple is
not only a worship place but a store house of knowledge and culture. Temples is
place where enlightenment, wisdom and ultimate truth can be discovered. India
has seen several rulers and invader who tried to destroy these holy structures
but Good things prevail over the evil. These Temples still represent the flourishing
and glorified structures of the Indian Legacy.
Sex Sculpture in Temple:
Nude posture is not taken very seriously when we see a child. We
feel it’s conflicting only when our mind loses its innocence. An innocent mind
is the basic requirement for God realization.
Looking at the creativity, sensuous carving in a few temples makes
it obvious that sex is an inevitable part of human life. The religious
importance is the emergence of a new life. Even Sex is included in the four
pillars of Hinduism – Dharma (religious duty), Artha (worldly welfare), Kama (sex)
and Moksha (salvation). Thus it’s a celebration of the way of life. Humans are supreme
creatures who don’t have any particular time to engage in sex unlike animals
who breed during certain seasons only. Celebrating sex is a ritual as it brings
a new life into existence. As temples were place for knowledge, this also
played an important role in educating the society. The image of god and goddess
shows the manifestation of Shakti. Tagore rightly said ‘The language of man
here is defeated by the language of stone’. Each structure is viewed differently
from person to person, some will see it as sex postures, some will see as day
to day activities, and while some see it as way for a better family life and
several other thoughts are related to these structures. The human imagination
plays a crucial role in the interpretation and understanding of richness of
these carvings.
You might have noticed that all the erotic sculpture will be in the
outside periphery of the temple. The inner walls don’t contain sexual carvings.
This means it’s a step towards attaining
the ultimate liberation. This depicts that one must leave sexual desires
outside the temple and devote ourselves with a holy mind and soul. The aim is
to cleanse the mind from worldly affairs inside the core of the temple where
the deity is placed. It’s a place where
an individual realizes the true nature of awareness within oneself.
Famous Temples depicting love:
Khajuraho and Padawali (Madhya Pradesh), Konark Sun Temple (Odisha),
Sun Temple (Gujarat) are a few names which arouse curiosity and puzzle the
tourists. Some tourists praise the ultimate union of male and female energy
while some feel that the carvings are erotic and forget to appreciate the inner
beauty of it which is an essential part of a life.
There is much more
representation than just the sexual carving. Non sexual images are also present
in these temples and they are built with equal proportions compared to the erotic
images. A person sees what his/her mind and soul wants to see. It validates
one’s perceptions and reflects the opinion and thoughts. Each temple represents
has its own unique features. Such as Konark Temple was built closer to the sea
and it was so perfectly designed that first rays of the shinning sun falls on
the temple directly, the magnetic power of the stones caused shipwrecks. Similarly
other temples have their unique artistry which requires the appreciation of the
beauty with an open mind.
Ancient Indians have equated these craftsmanship with the creation of the world. Ancient Indians were more open to these ideas compared to the prevailing generation where its taboo and people hesitate to talk about it. All Indians should be proud of these sculptures and should appreciate the holy union of man and woman. This will help everyone to closely relate with these holy structures.
